Overtime Pay Calculator — Complete Guide

What this calculator does

This tool turns your hourly rate and hours worked into a clear breakdown of regular pay, overtime pay and total pay for the period. Enter your base hourly rate, the number of standard (non-overtime) hours, the number of overtime hours, and the overtime multiplier that applies. The calculator returns the extra earnings generated by overtime, your total pay, your effective hourly rate across all hours, and the share of your paycheck that came from overtime.

It is useful both for checking a payslip and for deciding whether an extra shift is worth your time, since the effective hourly rate shows what you truly earned per hour once premium rates are blended in.

The overtime formula

regular pay = hourly rate × standard hours overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime hours × multiplier total pay = regular pay + overtime pay effective hourly rate = total pay ÷ (standard + overtime hours) overtime share = overtime pay ÷ total pay × 100

The multiplier is the premium applied to overtime hours only. A 1.5× rate means time-and-a-half: the overtime hour is paid at 150% of the base rate, so the worker effectively earns half an extra hour for every overtime hour. A 2× rate is "double time", and 3× is "triple time". Standard hours are always paid at the plain rate; the multiplier never applies to them.

A worked example

An employee earns $25 per hour, works 40 standard hours, and adds 6 overtime hours at 1.5×.

Those 6 overtime hours add $225 — the equivalent of nine base-rate hours — for six extra hours of work. The higher the multiplier, the more each extra hour is worth, as the table shows for the same six hours:

MultiplierOvertime payTotal payEffective hourly
1.25×$187.50$1,187.50$25.82
1.5×$225.00$1,225.00$26.63
2×$300.00$1,300.00$28.26
3×$450.00$1,450.00$31.52
