Salary to Hourly Calculator — Complete Guide

An annual salary tells you what a job pays over a year; an hourly rate tells you what each working hour is worth. Converting between them is the only fair way to compare a salaried offer against a contract, a part-time role or a freelance rate.

What this calculator does

Enter a salary and choose whether it is annual, monthly or weekly. Then set the hours you work each week, the number of weeks you actually work in the year, and optionally a daily-hours figure for the daily rate. Add an estimated tax rate if you want the net figures too. The result is the equivalent hourly rate, along with the daily, weekly, monthly and annual breakdown.

The formula

annual = salary × period multiplier (1 / 12 / 52)
paid hours = hours per week × working weeks
hourly = annual ÷ paid hours
weekly = annual ÷ working weeks
daily = hourly × daily hours
net hourly = hourly × (1 − tax rate)

The denominator is the key number: a standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours. Change either figure and the hourly rate moves.

A worked example

A $52,000 salary at 40 hours over 52 weeks: paid hours = 2,080, so the hourly rate is 52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00. Daily at 8 hours = $200, weekly = $1,000 and monthly = $4,333. Now suppose the role only pays for 48 working weeks — the same $52,000 now divides by 40 × 48 = 1,920 hours, giving $27.08 per hour. Nothing about the salary changed, but each paid hour is worth more because there are fewer of them.

SchedulePaid hoursHourly rate
40 h · 52 weeks2,080$25.00
40 h · 48 weeks1,920$27.08
20 h · 52 weeks1,040$50.00

How to use the result

Once you know your true hourly rate, a raise is easy to evaluate: a $2,000 annual increase at 2,080 paid hours is worth about 96 cents an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks worked per year). For a $52,000 salary at 40 hours over 52 weeks that is 52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25 per hour.

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Taking unpaid leave, or working part-time, lowers that number and raises the equivalent hourly rate.

Is the result gross or net?

The hourly rate is gross pay before tax and deductions. Enter an estimated tax rate to see the net hourly rate as well.
