Tip & Bill Split Calculator — Complete Guide

This calculator converts a single restaurant bill into three numbers you can act on: the tip, the grand total, and the exact amount each person owes. It supports any currency, any party size and any gratuity rate, so it works equally well for a quick two-person lunch or a large group dinner.

What this calculator does

You provide three inputs. The bill is the amount before or after tax, depending on how you prefer to tip. The tip percentage can be selected from the common presets (15%, 18%, 20%, 22%) or fine-tuned with the slider from 0% to 40%. The number of people determines how the total is divided. An optional round-up switch lifts each person's share to the next whole unit so no one has to hunt for loose change.

The formula

tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people
rounded per person = ceil(per person)

The math is deliberately transparent. There is no compounding, no service charge hidden in the background, and no rounding until the very last step, so the numbers you see always reconcile with the receipt.

A worked example

Say a table of four runs up an $86.50 subtotal and you choose an 18% tip. The tip is 86.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.57. The grand total becomes 86.50 + 15.57 = $102.07. Split four ways, each person pays 102.07 ÷ 4 = $25.52. If you switch on round-up, each share becomes $26.00 and the collected total rises to $104.00 — a modest cushion that keeps the table from passing around loose change.

Tips, mistakes and edge cases

Used consistently, the calculator removes the guesswork from splitting a bill and makes the final number easy to defend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tip should I leave?

In the US, 15–20% is customary for good service. Use the percentage to instantly compute the tip and each person’s share.

How do I split the bill fairly?

Enter the total, the tip percentage and the number of people. The calculator divides the bill equally and shows the per-person amount.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but you can use whichever total you prefer — the calculator works either way.
