Word Counter — Complete Guide

Virtually every piece of writing has a size budget: essays have minimums, ads have hard character limits, articles have target lengths, speeches have time slots. This counter measures all of them at once, live — words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and how long the text takes to read or to speak.

What this counter does

Type or paste into the box and every metric updates as you type. Words are counted with word-boundary logic that handles apostrophes and hyphens ("don't" is one word, "state-of-the-art" is one word), characters are counted raw and without whitespace, and reading time uses the 238-words-per-minute average from Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of silent reading.

The conventions behind the numbers

reading time ≈ words ÷ 238 per minute speaking time ≈ words ÷ 140 per minute one manuscript page ≈ 250–300 words double-spaced

Speaking is much slower than reading, which is why a 700-word article is a three-minute read but close to a five-minute talk. Presenters who read their script aloud should budget by the speaking number, not the reading one.

A worked example

A student essay of 1,200 words: 6,540 characters, 5,590 without spaces, 64 sentences, 7 paragraphs. Reading time is 1,200 ÷ 238 ≈ 5.0 minutes; reading it aloud takes 1,200 ÷ 140 ≈ 8.6 minutes. The average sentence runs 19 words — within the 15–20 word band most style guides recommend, so no splitting is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words should a page or an essay have?

Common editorial conventions: a double-spaced page is about 250–300 words, a single-spaced page 500–600. School and exam answers are usually counted by minimum, so hitting the floor matters more than the ceiling.

How is reading time estimated?

Silent reading averages about 238 words per minute across large studies (Brysbaert, 2019), so this tool divides your word count by 238. Speaking is slower — about 140 words per minute — which is the basis of the speaking-time estimate used for presentations and voice-overs.

How are Chinese and other CJK texts counted?

CJK writing has no spaces between words, so the counter treats each Chinese character as one word while grouping space-delimited languages the usual way. Character counts are unaffected and always exact.
