Percentage Calculator — Complete Guide

A percentage is simply a fraction with a denominator of 100, but the same symbol is used for several different questions. "What is 25% of 200?" asks for a part of a whole. "50 is what percent of 200?" asks for a ratio. "What is the change from 80 to 100?" asks for a relative change. Mixing these up is the most common source of wrong answers, so this calculator keeps the three modes separate.

What this calculator does

Choose a mode, enter two values, and the tool returns the matching result without you having to remember which number is the base. It handles finding a percentage of an amount, expressing one number as a percentage of another, and computing percentage increase or decrease.

The formulas

X% of Y = Y × X ÷ 100 X as % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100 % change = (Y − X) ÷ |X| × 100

In the change formula the original value is the denominator. Using the absolute value keeps the sign of the result tied to the direction of the change rather than to the sign of the starting number.

A worked example

Take a price that rises from $80 to $100. The change is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%, an increase. At the same time, if you only look at the new price, $80 is 80 ÷ 100 × 100 = 80% of $100, so the drop back down is a 20% decrease. The same pair of numbers produces 25% up and 20% down because the base differs each time.

Common mistakes and edge cases

Do not add percentages that are measured against different bases: a 20% rise followed by a 20% fall does not return you to the start. Keep percentage points separate from percentages — moving from 20% to 25% is a 5 percentage-point rise but a 25% relative increase. Percentage change is undefined when the original value is zero, and discounts, tips and growth rates should always be applied to the correct base amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate X% of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 25% of 200 = 200 × 25 ÷ 100 = 50.

How is percentage change calculated?

Percentage change = (new value − old value) ÷ |old value| × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative result is a decrease.

What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?

A percentage is a share of a total; percentage points measure the arithmetic difference between two percentages. Going from 20% to 25% is a 5 percentage-point rise but a 25% increase.
