Age Calculator — Complete Guide

Your age is not a single number. In years it changes once every twelve months; in months, weeks and days it changes constantly. This calculator converts a birth date and a reference date into all of those units at once, so you can answer everything from "how many days old am I?" to "how long until my next birthday?" Whether you need it for a form, a retirement countdown or a fun milestone, the same two dates drive every figure.

What this calculator does

Pick your date of birth, then choose the date to measure at — it defaults to today. The tool returns your exact age in years, months and days, the total number of days and weeks you have lived, and a countdown to your next birthday. You can set the reference date to the past or the future, which is useful for your age on a specific event, application deadline or anniversary.

How the age is worked out

Rather than dividing total days by 365.25, the calculation subtracts the dates column by column. It takes whole years first, then whole months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the next larger unit whenever a component would go negative. This is why the result matches how people actually state their age, and why it copes with uneven month lengths and leap years automatically.

Step 1: years = endYear − startYear Step 2: months = endMonth − startMonth Step 3: days = endDay − startDay Borrow 12 months when months < 0, and the length of the previous month when days < 0.

A worked example

Born 15 March 1990, measured at 1 October 2026.

Years: 2026 − 1990 = 36 Months: 10 − 3 = 7, minus one after borrowing → 6 Days: 1 − 15 = −14, borrow September's 30 days → 16 Exact age: 36 years, 6 months, 16 days

The total elapsed time is about 13,349 days, or 1,907 weeks. The next birthday falls on 15 March 2027, which is 165 days after the reference date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my age calculated?

The calculator subtracts your birth date from the selected date step by step — first whole years, then whole months, then the remaining days — so it correctly accounts for different month lengths and leap years.

Does it handle leap-year birthdays (February 29)?

Yes. Because the age is built up from real calendar dates, February 29 birthdays are handled correctly; in non-leap years the next-birthday countdown rolls to March 1.

Can I calculate my age on a past or future date?

Absolutely. Change the "Age at Date" field to any date. If your birth date is later than that date, the tool will show a warning instead of a negative age.
